Objectives and Outcomes


The educational objectives of the Fundamentals of Engineering Program are:

  • To recruit qualified students into engineering
  • To provide the academic and social support needed to help students be successful in their
    • Transition to college life;
    • Development of academic discipline and skills necessary for entering and succeeding in an academically challenging major;
    • Foundational courses (Math, Chemistry, Physics, and basic engineering); and
    • Selection of an engineering discipline major.


The Fundamentals of Engineering Program uses both curricular and extra-curricular programmatic elements to meet its educational objectives. Specific educational outcomes are listed; those outcomes which also meet a specific ABET, Inc. Learning Outcome include the ABET, Inc. Learning Outcome (LO) in parentheses following the educational outcome statement. Students who successfully complete the requirements of the WVU Freshman Engineering Program will be able to:

  • Apply their knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering, as well as problem-solving techniques, to solve engineering problems (ABET LO I.3.a)
  • Use Microsoft Excel® and MATLAB® as tools to analyze and interpret data (I.3.b)
  • Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within given constraints (ABET LO I.3.c)
  • Work collaboratively on a team (ABET LO I.3.d)
  • Define, formulate, and solve engineering problems (ABET LO I.3.e)
  • Demonstrate their understanding of professional and ethical responsibility by applying ethical principles and professional standards to making engineering decisions (ABET LO I.3.f)
  • Communicate effectively — both orally and in writing (ABET LO I.3.g)
    Use Microsoft Word®, Excel®, and Power Point®, and a programming tool, such as MATLAB®, as tools to analyze, report, and present data (ABET LO I.3.g)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of engineering solutions and actions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context (ABET LO I.3.h).
  • Demonstrate the academic maturity and skills necessary to manage their time and use available resources, as necessary, to succeed in their coursework and to engage in lifelong learning (ABET LO I.3.i).
  • Use Word®, Excel®, AutoCAD®, Power Point® as engineering tools to perform computations, analyze and plot data, and model a simple system as part of solving an engineering problem (I.3.k).
  • Select a major that fits with their career goals (FEP).
